La Liga giants FC Barcelona confirmed that their Danish defender Andreas Christensen has suffered a sprained ankle in their last Champions league fixture.
The Denmark International was given a start along with Eric Garcia in the central defense for Barcelona in their last Champions League match against Inter Milan at San Siro.
Despite a decent start, Barcelona conceded at the stoppage time of the first half. They went back into the dressing being down by one goal.
The Catalan giants came back with a great intent to find the equaliser but then suddenly suffered another setup when Andreas Christensen got injured. Gerrard Pique was then brought in his place. The Catalans failed to score any more goals and Inter ran away with a narrow 1-0 victory.
In an official statement regarding the injury of Andreas Christensen Barcelona said, “Tests carried out on Wednesday have confirmed that the first team player Andreas Christensen has a sprained left ankle. He is unavailable and his recovery will dictate his return.”
Now according to the Spanish outlet AS, this will keep Andreas Christensen out for at least 3 weeks depending on the degree of the sprain.
Since joining Barcelona at the start of the season on a free transfer from Chelsea, Andreas Christensen has been great for the Catalan giants. The defender has shown great consistency and obviously will be a big miss for Xavi’s squad.
Christensen is also a major part of the Denmark national team. And they will be relieved to hear that the defender will be able to return in full fitness before the start of the upcoming Qatar World Cup.
Xavi however, will be really tense about the situation. Prior to Christensen’s injury, Barcelona lost two more defenders in Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde. The only two centre-backs available for them are now Eric Garcia and Gerrard Pique.
Barcelona have already stumbled in a very crucial month of October. they have many big games coming up. Barcelona will face Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. And after their back-to-back losses in the continental tournament, they will have to get results from these matches.
The Blaugrana will also face real Madrid in La Liga which is potentially going to be a league decider. And with these many injuries, Xavi will be surely under some pressure.
Now the good news for Barcelona supporters is that Frenkie de Jong is back from his injury. The Dutch International has been pictured in training. This gives Xavi another option at the centre-back position.
Barcelona will now face Celta Vigo in their next outing in La Liga. Following the la Liga encounter, they will host Inter Milan in a do-or-die match.
