Tottenham Hotspur has announced the sad and sudden death of their fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone.
Ventrone is a popular and famous figure in Italian football, as he brought the culture of tough training regimes to Juventus. Nowadays that has become one of the primary aspects of Italian football. He also earned the nickname ‘The Marine’ because of that.
The Italian joined Tottenham as Conte’s one of the main staff in 2021. He died of leukemia at the age of 62.
After getting ill, Ventrone was taken to the Fatebenefratelli hospital in Naples before his sudden passing away on Thursday.

Spurs confirmed the news on their official Twitter; as they wrote: “We are devastated to announce that fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone has passed away. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the Club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this impossibly sad time.”

The 62-year-old joined the North London club as part of Antonio Conte’s backroom team in November 2021.

Juventus Paying Tribute

Ventrone played the role of fitness coach in the 1996 Champions League-winning Juventus team.

His former club Juventus has also paid a touching tribute to his sudden passing away, as they wrote on their official website: “Gone is one of the ‘historical’ names of Juve at the turn of the century. Gian Piero Ventrone left us at the age of just 62: he worked for many seasons as Juventus’ athletic trainer, from 1994 to 1999, contributing, together with Mister Lippi, to building and taking care of a Juve that won everything, in Italy and in Europe.”

Ventrone then returned to Juve in 2001 and worked until 2004. He also worked with Lippi, as a staff member of the 2006 World Cup-winning Italy team. He worked in France, China, and England as well.

The Old Lady also added in their tribute message: “We will always remember his discreet figure, his attention to detail, his philosophy of work, and above all what was perhaps his greatest talent: understanding how football (and therefore one of its fundamental components, physical and athletic fitness) was gradually entering a new era. A new era that, in part, he helped to write.”

His Relationship With the Players

Conte cancelled his press conference on Thursday afternoon before Saturday’s game at Brighton to pay respect. The Italian sides are also going to pay tribute to their legend.
The Tottenham Hotspur players have yet to react to this tragic situation.

As Son spoke last month before scoring his hattrick against Leicester City: “I have a really, really good relationship with Gian Piero.” The South Korean international also revealed how the Italian tried to express and translate his broken English with his phone. He also helped Son in his tough times and even in the great moments. Sonny is also grateful for all the advice he gave.

In July, Matt Doherty also revealed the intensity of Ventrone’s provided workout session. He said: “I don’t know if there will be any teams fitter than us. This is hard, the hardest pre-season I’ve had. It’s not like anything I’ve done before. But you get great satisfaction once the session is over.”

Ventrone’s sudden demise this morning has left the Tottenham Hotspur family heartbroken with an unexpected loss.
